How to Contact Your Elected Officials

Making Your Voice Heard

Contacting your elected representatives is one of the most effective forms of civic participation. Calls, emails, and letters from constituents are tracked and do make a difference, especially on local and state issues.

Tips for an Effective Message

  • Identify yourself as a constituent and include your address
  • Be specific about the issue you are writing about
  • Share how the issue affects you or your community personally
  • Be respectful and concise. A few clear paragraphs is more effective than a long letter.
  • Ask for a specific action or response
  • Follow up. A second contact a few weeks later reinforces your message.

Sample Letter Template

Feel free to adapt this template for any issue that matters to you:

Dear [Representative's Name],

My name is [Your Name] and I am a constituent from [Your City/Town], Georgia, [Your ZIP Code].

I am writing to share my thoughts on [the issue you are writing about]. This issue is important to me because [explain how it affects you or your community].

I am asking you to [specific action: support a bill, oppose a measure, hold a hearing, etc.].

Thank you for your service and for representing our community. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Address] [Your Phone or Email]
